The great thing about the NFL overreaction is that it doesn’t even have to be weekly. They can jerk by the minute over the course of a single game. The minute the Colts knew they weren’t going to score more, the next minute they were winning the game in overtime.
At various points in Week 5, the Colts’ season is at its lowest point, the Vikings trying to blow off an 18-point game lead over the Bears, the Giants missing offensive players, and perhaps the Packers. The Buccaneers’ defense was about to blow their 21-point fourth-quarter lead.
All four of these teams won the game.
We do this every week in this space. Throw out the wild declarative statements about the imperfect season and decide if those statements are an overreaction. But the nature of the NFL doesn’t have to wait that long. Maybe we should set up something like the NFL’s overreacting Twitter account and start firing these during the game instead of waiting until the game is over.
Run it up the flagpole and see if it catches up. In the meantime, enjoy our traditional format showcasing Week 5’s NFL Overreactions.
